The Best Spelling Homework Activities For 1st Grade Students
1st grade students have natural problems with phonetics, diction and grammar. They are yet to acquire a clinical brain and have not encountered a system of education that should put them in the right boat.
The big question
The question arises – How can they learn spellings of words that are due to come in common use? This is where spelling homework comes to the fore. You have to plan out interesting assignments for the kids.
One of the most potent assignments is to make them repeat with color codes. You can ask them to write 6-7 words they feel tough (about 7-letter words). Now, they should paint each word in different colors. They should then proceed to repeat each colored word five times by spelling them out. The color is only to put a dramatic effect.
You can also make them choose words from a glut to create a short story they might have heard. Make them toil to find tough words among the collection that are relevant to the story. The story can be as common as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
You can make them create butterflies or birds by writing the letters of the words in sequential form in a pattern of a sketch. Then can then fill the gaps by writing other words in it. Give them the advice to use different colors for different words.
Ask them to invent a small story about any commonplace article; say their lunch box. Request them to replete the story with 5 tough words. Advice them to use the dictionary or to ask their parents about the same.
Create teams and then ask the players of different teams to throw hard words at each other. The other team has to spell the words and there would be rewards for correct spellings and penalties for wrong ones. You can use interesting rewards to keep them more motivated.
Ask them to find tough words in a passage given to them either in a book or created by you. Now, they have to mark 7 tough words and then remember the spellings. These will be asked by you in the next class.
An absorbing task
It is actually an absorbing task to make the 1st grade kids good at spellings. You can rack your brains to invent fascinating spelling homework for them. You may even ask the kids about the games they like to play at home and somehow insert the assignments in that mode.
